iPhone 2.0.1 gripes

iphone August 13th, 2008

It really feels like Apple rushed the 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 firmware updates out the door ahead of their time. Hello doesn’t this sound familiar me.com? I won’t even go into that catastrophe of a launch. All Apple did there is prove they can’t run an online service and you are better off shopping elsewhere for your needs. People were without email for more than 2 weeks HAHAHAHAHAHAH OMG I wouldn’t know where to start ripping them a new ass over that one. If 1 hour downtime in email is on the verge of unacceptable by today’s standards, what do you call 2 weeks? Service no longer reliable, pull the rip cord and leave them behind!

Back to the iPhone… there are so many more bugs and crashes than the rock stable 1.1.4. Let’s see if I can run down the list that I can remember off the top of my head.

For starters all applications, both native Apple apps that have been there since day 1 and downloaded third party apps suffer from random crashes for no apparent reason. Sometimes when you first launch them you immediately get returned to the home screen. Wonderful isn’t it, ggrrrr….

The screen auto dim no longer ‘auto’ dims for me, I have to unlock the device, lock it, then unlock again to get the screen to auto dim. This gets old FAST!

Oh and the granddaddy of all complaints, why the HELL does it take almost 1.5 hrs to sync my iPhone EVERY single time I plug it into the computer!!! Hello this is not 1995 with 19.2 baud connections!!!! The process that takes forever is the ‘backing up iPhone…’ step of the sync. I can’t fathom why in the world this process is so gosh darn slow. My iPhone only has 8GB of storage, and 1.4GB is unused!!! I’ve tried restoring the device, deleting the backup from itunes, reinstalling itunes… nadda this is a humongous oversight on Apple’s part, and they didn’t fix it in either the itunes 7.7.1 or the iphone 2.0.1 updates!!!!! Absolutely no excuse for it, get off your collective lazy asses Apple and fix it already. Can you tell this bug annoys me to no end. As a developer myself I KNOW this can’t be a hard problem to fix, it just isn’t, plain and simple. No f’ing excuse for it to exist after 2 ‘bug fix’ releases have been released already… NOOOOONNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!! < end rant >

Ok what’s next, oh how about these nice 3-6 second delays that appear all over the device now? Ya how do you like that, oh you wanted to look at your settings screen, hold on a few seconds while I think about it. You wanted to check your email, oh no gotta wait a few moments here too. Checking the internet for something, give me a sec to load up safari. Ok now this bug may be a little more difficult to troubleshoot and root cause. I’ll give Apple some slack on this one, but considering that this hardly EVER happened in 1.1.4 it shouldn’t be rocket science!! A little bit annoying but still needs to be fixed.

‘Oh no, your device is low on memory! Please exit this App and restart the iPhone’…….. ummm what happened to memory management????? Did that get left behind in 1.1.4 hahahahahha. Again no excuse to ever see this dialog box at ANY time doing ANYTHING on this device. Back to basics… how to manage memory and caches, absolutely embarrassing for them Apple developers, come on guys this isn’t a Windows Mobile device, your ‘OS X’ experience on the iPhone is getting tarnished, BY YOURSELF!!!!

1.1.4 was rock solid, I think I crashed Safari 2 or 3 times, but that was it, no other app ever crashed. The interface was much more ’snappy’ than 2.0.1, no lag time anywhere noticeable. If it weren’t for the success of the App store I would seriously be considering downgrading back to 1.1.4 and just using jailbroken app installations.

VPN and Exchange are pretty nice also, I would miss those if I downgraded. For now I just have to put up with these annoyances until Apple gets around to fixing them….. ho hum the life of a gadgetier.
